Can't imagine why anyone would give this place anything but 5 stars! I dream about this place and I send pictures of my food to out of state friends so they can be jealous. The beef soft tacos are what I live for. The tasty taters are just tater tots but they are 100 times better at Tasty Tacos. The lines get long and so is the wait, it can be hard to find a table at lunch time...all of this is forgivable once my taco arrives. Complain about the wait, the line and the seating but none of this would be a problem if the food sucked.

The first time I came here, I was expecting more authentic food....i guess i'm gonna have to keep on looking.... I ordered some nachos and the chicken enchilada...and I enjoyed it. At a later visit, I was STARVING...I ordered 2 Tacos...a chicken and beef, and Jalapeno Poppers. My boyfriend, Starving as well, ordered a Burrito. We were confused as to why the taco cost more than the burrito, but when we got our food....it was clear why. I could have sworn the burrito was the same as an enchilada! The tacos tho.......tastyyyyy!!! =) I'm preferring the chicken as my choice of meat here. Its got a lot more flavor and is juicy compared to the beef. The taco casing is comparable to a less greasy chalupa..... The jalapeno poppers were okay...they were somewhat cold when they were served to us...hardening thick cheese just isn't that yummy. This branch tricks me though...I keep hoping there's a drive through.

A must try with many locations in Des Moines area. The shell is what makes these tacos unique. A fluffy soft flour tortilla made with love. Meat, beans, lettuce, and cheese make up the classic version. A tip: These are larger than average tacos. And since they are not made with crap packaged in crap, they are more filling.

I was visiting my Best Friend in Des Moines and everyone kept telling me that I just HAD to try this place. I was a bit skeptical, having been born and raised in San Diego, where we have REAL Mexican food. I should have gone with my gut - because I am sorry to say that this place is horrible! This is not Mexican food. If you have never been to an authentic restaurant or taco shop - there should not be jalapeno poppers, onion rings, fried mushrooms, etc. on the menu. After seeing the menu, I knew what I was in for and decided on still giving it a try, because it could still be good food, even if it isn't authentic. I was thouroughly disappointed. I didn't find anything about my tacos to be "tasty." From now on I will stick to eating at my local taco shop near home, where they have menudo on weekends and make fresh carne asada daily. Sorry Iowans, but you don't know what you are missing!

Upon moving to Des Moines I did a lot of research as to what restaurants I should try. Tasty Tacos always got good a good mention. The reason why this review gets 3 stars, instead of 4 or 5 is because at this location the service wasn't very good, the wait was long, and the food was cold by time we got it. Don't order the enchiladas, they're not saucy. They seem to be the same as the burrito, I actually couldn't tell the two apart. Your best bet is to get the regular flour taco. The shell is like one of those "Indian" tacos that you get at the state fair. They taste great, and are loaded with cheese. Maybe a little too much cheese. By all means, go to Tasty Tacos! It's great fast food.

I do understand how the other reviewer might think the tacos at Tasty Tacos have too much cheese, but for me there is no such thing! I LOVE CHEESE! Bring it on! We usually pick up the food and head home, but we've discovered it doesn't matter if you call ahead or not, we think they make the tacos when you get there regardless. That said, I love Tasty Tacos! I hate beans; however, there are not enough of them in the meat to turn me off! In other words, I eat the beans even though I don't like them because I don't really notice them. LOVE the flour nachos. They are basically the flour taco shell cut into triangles, but the portion is usually pretty generous. Although prices have gone up, we still order from them, just not as much as before. Highly recommend!

This is the most disgustingly plain taco place ive ever been too. Even taco bell and taco johns has better tacos. Their meat is bland, the taco shell was cold. Cheap stringy lettuce. Everything obviously comes from a can. Where's the cilantro? Where's the lime? Where's the homemade hot sauce and fresh veggies? Not at tasty tacos that's for sure! Go spend you cash at an authentic taco truck, DONT waste your money on this overrated crap.

Beyond disappointed! I'm not from Iowa and was in Des Moines on a company work trip. I figured that since this place has build-boards everywhere it must be good and I would give it a try. I was wrong! I couldn't have tacos bc they fry the tortillas (No fried food, doctors orders). Who fries tortillas for tacos?!? Yuck! So I had the most disappointing burrito I've ever had in my life. The burrito consists of a cold flour tortilla with chicken and cheddar cheese. This place makes Taco Bells food look like an exquisite meal.

Tasty Tacos is uniquely Tasty Tacos. They're a staple of "Mexican" food for central Iowa. While I have experienced authentic Mexican food in a number of places around the United States, I would consider Tasty Tacos comparable in quality and taste. Their namesake tacos are unmatched - full of meat and beans with a rich fried shell and light greens and cheese. I was introduced to Tasty Tacos as a child and I have passed this great family-friendly tradition on to my own children. We love it and think you will too!

Delicious high quality food. It amuses me when someone states Mexican food is, or is not "authentic". This food is authentic to the family tradition of the couple who started the restaurant in 1961 using his families recipes from Mexico. Like any countries food, cuisine varies widely by region and within families. The signature item, (the tacos) are not that complex: tasty seasoned meat blends, cheese, lettuce and tomato in a deep fried flour tortilla shell. Simple but delicious and a real iconic food experience near to the hearts of those who call Des Moines their home. My favorite item is the flour tostada because the refried beans are the best I have had anywhere. I love slathering on their made in-house taco sauce. The sauce is a little spicy. The fried sides (Cheese Curds, Poppers, tasty tators etc are not outstanding as these are frozen items, not made in house. They offer some good variety but it isn't what the place is valuable for. I do like the wings.

We stopped in here just before closing at 10 pm and they were not hesitant about serving us, and that's an anomaly in itself in des moines. I was trying to stay off eating meat that day so I had the bean burrito and bean taco. They were fine. I will say that the jalapeno poppers were excellent, crispy, good amount of cream cheese and hot. I might venture here again but not on a meatless day

I have to say I was very unimpressed. I was told by many people how good the chicken was so you can imagine my surprise when I bit into my taco to find processed chicken. The flour taco itself was fine and the lettuce and cheese seemed fresh but if I wanted processed chicken I could have just as easily gone and had a gordita at Taco Bell. Sorry Des Moines but this one was a disappointment.

Probably the best place to get tacos in the Des Moines area! Great place to go for a $5 lunch!! Cheap meal and quality food. If you are looking for authentic, look elsewhere. But I do believe they have made it on Food Network before(the chain, I don't think this location).

I was first introduced to Tasty Tacos when I came to Des Moines a few years back and now am a regular customer. Their tacos taste different from anywhere else I've been in my life, they taste REAL. Their flour tacos and nachos are the staple items, must try! Their decor is order at the counter from an old school looking menu, which is interesting. The whole feel with the restaurant is like a family run place. They have expanded so much I think they are available to everyone in the area. One thing I learned is that their burritos are very small...order a lot if you plan to get full. Their sides are tasty as well. Staff is friendly, but you won't really interact with them.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
